Spreader bars are most often made of hardwood. They are a patented system to keep the hammock ropes spread apart. A board that is approximately 3-5 feet long and 3-6 inches wide is a typical spreader bar. Holes are drilled in the board and the rope is then guided through to the hammock frame. Spreader bars are a relatively new feature for hammocks. It is a modern invention. The purpose is to make the hammock easier to get in and out of. In addition, the hammock stays wider and is roomier. The main disadvantage is that they are much easier to tip out of. You wouldn’t want this type of hammock in high trees. |
