Portability
Hammock stands make it easier to move the hammock. A hammock tied to a tree can be moved, but it is not as convenient.

No Trees
If you don’t have large enough trees, you need another alternative. Some people will install posts. Installing posts is a good way to go if you are ok with having a permanent structure in your yard. If not, a stand is the best option.

Metal is great because it is very light and strong. In addition, it is inexpensive.

Wood
The main advantage of wood is beauty. Wood is heavier, costs more, and looks nicer.

Caution
Make sure the stand is tall enough to accomodate your hammock. Some hammock stands don’t work with certain hammocks. The main problem being that some stands aren’t tall enough to accomodate longer hammocks.
