The hammock frame is often referred to as a hammock stand.  The frame can often be made out of wood.  Some people can build a pretty good frame out of 2 * 4 lumber alone.

Store purchased frames are usually made of steel or aluminum.  Aluminum is lighter and easier to carry.  If you have a portable hammock, it is very likely that the frame is made of aluminum.

You can make a stationary frame from 4*4 fence posts.  Then, eye screws or eye bolts are needed to secure the hammock.
